How are you doing ?

Steve Diggle : Very good, thank you.

You've been doing a few shows this week. How has it been going ?

S.D. : Oh, fantastic ! Really good shows.

What's the actuality of the Buzzcocks

? The last album was released in 2006, is there anything new in preparation ?

S.D. : There are some songs around. We've just been touring over the last couple of years so we haven't managed to go to the studio with them yet but we will do it at some point. It's just been a lot of touring.

So nothing fixed yet...

S.D. : Nothing fixed, no. I'm just bringing out a solo single. I'm in the studio when I get back doing that. I'm doing a new solo album. That's quicker for me to do than to get the Buzzcocks

together. Everybody lives in different places now.

You hardly ever stop touring with the Buzzcocks

. Is there any specific highlight or memory you could share ?

S.D. : Some magic happens every night. That's the reason we do it really. You can't beat that live experience, the interaction between the crowd and the band.

Is it different every night ?

S.D. : Well it's a different feeling from the crowd, a different kind of electricity. Some magic happens in the middle between the band and the audience. This chemistry, this alchemy only happen during that hour and a half. It's an amazing experience and it's very important to play live and that's what we do. It's one thing having records but when you play live, you're free. The songs take on a different life. In fact we've extended some of the songs, we put little bits in live to make it even more interesting. So it's very important to play live. Buzzcocks

is a band who do that really well.

I guess now you only play for big crowds. Don't you miss the smaller venues ?

S.D. : Erm... Yes but they're not always that big. We do play to big crowds but it's just so that more people can see us. Sometimes we play small venues as well. We play all ranges of venues really. But it's all the same. It's great to play a really small venue because we're really closer with the band but in bigger places at least people can see the band as well. Sometimes if it's small, people in the back can't see. Also with a bigger stage there's more room to move, breathe and expand a bit more. But we've done all kinds of sizes over the years. It's all good.

Anything else to say to our readers ?

S.D. : Yes. When we started doing this music, it was beyond entertainment at all. It awakens people's consciousness about how they respond to music and who they are. There are quite a few bands that we started off with that seem to suggest that and Buzzcocks

hasn't been like that. It inspires you and makes you think a little bit "I can do that in my life" or things like that. And I think that's one of the important things about being in a band like ours, to inspire people in many ways. That's one of the reasons why we wrote songs and do that ourselves. There are questions in all kinds of things. I think it's important to do that when you listen to music rather than simply be entertained.
